today was bill gates' last day as ceo of microsoft. at 6:00pm pst he officially left the office he has held since the company's creation many years ago in 1975. while many don't like microsoft's seeming "monopoly" over the computer industry, nor their business tactics, nor their software, everyone can agree that it is one of, if not the most, successful company ever. the tiny software startup is now one of the largest companies in the world, and probably the most influential. gates has been at the forefront of the company for its entire existence and today, that changes forever.

i personally don't like gate's business strategies, but one has to agree that they worked. i don't like the operating system, but again, it works, and a massive percentage of the world's billion computers can attest to its functionality. what i do like about gates is his philanthropy. he has gone so much further than the robber-barons of old, he actually cares about his charity. the bill and melinda gates foundation is one of the greatest organizations working to make the world a better place. and at the center of that movement is the gates family and the millions (probably billions) bill gates has put forth to fund the non profit. with gates assuming the leading role at his foundation, one can hope his unorthodox methods can lead to the same success in fighting poverty, disease, and malnourishment around the world. today marks the end of the microsoft era for gates and the beginning of a new one that will hopefully make the world a much better place for everyone.
